The second year Photo Art students who recently went to Berlin were introduced to Newport alumni Stuart Bailes, who discussed his practice, life after university as well as showing us around his Berlin studio.
Whilst there he mentioned an upcoming show - his first solo show - at Edel Assanti in London this summer and the details of the show have just emerged, so go check it out if you can!

Stuart Bailes graduated from Photographic Art at Newport in 2007.
"I am interested in the mechanics of the image. I want to know what something will look like as a photograph. What form does a code or symbol take? How does an encounter appear to us?"
Edel Assanti is pleased to present Stuart Bailes’ first London solo exhibition, an overview of the artist’s practice over the last two years. Stuart Bailes’ evocative compositions are the documentation of the artist's exploration of human sensory experience, and our interactions with the physical and metaphysical world. His work is as much an interrogation of the limitations of our capacity for visual analysis as it is an investigation of the reductive process of representing reality through the medium of photography. In Bailes’ own words: “My work is about decision making; it’s about deciding to understand or not to understand.”
